The CATs offer two free training programs in preparation for spring trail races. Both of these training programs kick-off in January. Some, but not all, of the training runs will share a common start location and similar route, with different distance options available to meet each program’s needs.

Our training programs are open to all runners, and you are welcome to join the weekly group runs on Saturday. You don’t have to sign up for the programs, or plan on doing one of the races, just come out and have fun!

The location and start time of the Saturday group runs are posted every Wednesday on our Facebook Page and emailed to all subscribers of the CAT Mailing List Subscribe now!

CATs Training Programs

winter creek Training Program

Join a group of like-minded trail enthusiasts each Saturday in January/February for a long run. The mileage will gradually increase each week to prepare for the 25k race at Naked Creek at the beginning of March. There are also two tune-up races, Burke Creek at the beginning of January and Walnut Creek at the beginning of February, to test your fitness and dial in your race day strategy. The training runs will be an informal gathering of individuals interested in socializing, checking out new trail systems, and/or suffering in the presence of others. Generally, multiple pace groups will form each week, but please be prepared with the route maps and weather-appropriate clothing. The route maps and pertinent weekend information (route updates/location changes/etc.) will be announced before each run.

Make sure you sign up for the CATs Facebook Group and CAT Email List for group run details.

50K Training Program

Ultras can seem like an impossible feat, but with a great plan and persistence you can do it. The CATs 50K training plan prepares you for the Promise Land 50K in April. But you can also use this program to prepare for another trail 50K.

The training plan calls for long trail runs on Saturdays. If you’d like to do your long runs with fellow trail runners, make sure you sign up for the CATs Facebook Group and CAT Email List to see if a group run is organized. Some Saturday runs will be lead by CAT board members, but we encourage all participants to use our Facebook group and email list to organize runs. For ideas on where to go, check out our overview of local trails and VHTRC’s Furbutts Favorite Training Runs.
